چکیده

Nitinol (NiTi), the most widely used shape-memory alloy, exhibits an austenite phase that has yet to be identified. The usually assumed austenitic structure is cubic B2, which has imaginary phonon modes, hence it is unstable. We suggest a stable austenitic structure that " on average " has B2 symmetry (observed by x-ray and neutron diffraction), but it exhibits finite atomic displacements from the ideal B2 sites. The proposed structure has a phonon spectrum that agrees with that from neutron scattering, has diffraction spectra in agreement with x-ray diffraction, and has an energy relative to the ground state that agrees with calorimetry data.

Shape-memory transformations of NiTi: minimum-energy pathways between austenite, martensites, and kinetically limited intermediate states.

NiTi is the most used shape-memory alloy; nonetheless, a lack of understanding remains regarding the associated structures and transitions, including their barriers. Using a generalized solid-state nudged elastic band method implemented via density-functional theory, we detail the structural transformations in NiTi relevant to shape memory: those between a body-centered orthorhombic (bco) groun...

Metallurgical characterization of controlled memory wire nickel-titanium rotary instruments.

INTRODUCTION To improve the fracture resistance of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files, manufacturers have introduced new alloys and developed new manufacturing processes for the fabrication of NiTi files. This study aimed to examine the phase transformation behavior and microstructure of NiTi instruments from a novel controlled memory NiTi wire (CM wire). METHODS Instruments of EndoSequence (ES), P...

Mechanical Properties of Superelastic and Shape - Memory NiTi and NiTi - TiC Composites

The objective of this work was to study materials subjected to external loading where alternative deformation mechanisms are available to generate strains. In the case of shapememory and superelastic NiTi, these mechanisms are twinning and stress-induced phase transformation, respectively. Superelastic NiTi (51.0 at.% Ni) reinforced with 0, 10 and 20 vol.% TiC particles was fabricated by Hot Is...

On the electronic and mechanical instabilities in Ni50.9Ti49.1

Both the superelastic and the shape memory properties of the cubic NiTi alloy known as Nitinol arise from two-phase transitions; from a simple cubic austenite phase to a trigonal R-phase and to a lower symmetry martensite phase. In this article, we speculate that two competing forces drive these transitions. One is “mechanical” in nature and it takes the cubic austenite structure of NiTi to a d...

An in Situ Neutron Diffraction Mechanical Study of Superelastic Niti and Niti-tic Composites

Superelastic NiTi and NiTi-TiC composites were subjected to static uniaxial compressive loading while neutron diffraction spectra were simultaneously acquired. A methodology was established to obtain quantitative strain, texture and phase volume fraction information during the forward and reverse stress-induced martensitic transformation. Despite the presence of 10 vol. % of stiff TiC particles...
